First thing you locate at the library is the ‘Passage and Return of Erebos’s Realm’.
In Theros when you die, a clay mask is crafted and placed on your face. You wear it in the afterlife cause it holds together your memories and personalities. Some of the underworld denizens choose to break there mask(clay mask locks them in the underworld) and craft a new one from the gold that is plenty in Erebos’s Realm. With that they make there way back to the world of the living. If they do make it back, there is no long term memory or personality. They still have the skills, but no real sense of self to go with it. Others maybe lost on the way back and stop existing effectively. Other get lost on the way back and instead of fading hold onto that anger and sorrow and nurse its strength. Eventually all that darkness consumes them and a demon is born. Many stay there to torment other, but few choose to use there wings to fly over the 5 rivers that circle the world and return to the land of the living to so devastation. Each of them seem to focus on a cardinal sin, but not exclusively. Most of the time these demons are killed by Hero’s through dramatic battles, and cunning skills.
Now that doesn’t really help with the Eligos problem. Asphodel though is not techniquelly an evil city, of the two Necropoli it is actual very easy going and tame. The Returned that live there go about basic lives cause they seem to understand nothing else, they are resigned to the fate and just keep acting it out until some strong emotion pulls them to do something else. The town has a guard, and a mage corpse for defense cause Zealots and sometime the gods call crusades against them, claiming them to be a base evil. The town should be avoided, but they shouldn’t be trying to kill you outright until you give them reason. Asphodel is a full size town with Inns, temples, and a market place (if that’s what you want to call it) and there currency is the clay coins broken from funeral mask so don’t expect your gold to be of any use, they have plenty.
Now Odunos is the polis stands in contrast to Asphodel. Its citizens tend toward a combination of greedy, violent, and resentful. These Returned have come to envy and/or despise the living and are driven by a desire to deprive them of the joys of life. Odunos raiders strike at any humanoids nearby—leonin, minotaurs, and the humans of Akros and environs. Their raids are small but effective, and almost always nocturnal. Whereas Asphodel's citizens pointlessly amass wealth, Odunos seeks to destroy the wealth of the living (both literal, such as gold, and figurative, such as food, children, and comfort).
Mellir- Interesting. And the portal is located near Asphodel, not Odunos?
The portal according to the Oracle was located inside Asphodel. The battle with the Minotuars was just north of town suggesting the Minotaur’s were still getting to close
Mellir- I note that they have had battles with demons and set the book aside to show Yaoel, then i look up the stories of heroes vs demons
Heros seem to use some object like a gorgons head, or outsmart they demon based on there vice. there isnt any stories of them just beating them into submission
Mellir- Ok, these objects, any of them still around or anything in particular stand out?
Poisons taken from gaint scorpions, or Gorgons heads (stuff that is rare and gives you deathtouch) seem to be the surest way, if you can get ahold of it in the first place
Mellir- So no artifacts or godly weapons passed to heroes. No Athena's Golden Fleece, or such
Sandels that grant the user flight, helms of invisibility, a lyre that is said to put anyone to sleep.. minor stuff on that end. No fleece
Mellir- Bah, well i take note of it all and pass it on to Yaoel in case she has an idea. I would love to get my hands on some of that stuff, particularly the flight beings they have wings, but its not our current focus. "This is all I am finding, you find anything important?
"I already know one of the strongest kill spells to this realm... gods dont seem to take active rolls ever, just buff a human or the like up and let them clean up all the messes. Bout the best new so far is Aspodel shouldnt be hostile, but we dont know what the phyrexians are doing to them there."
Mellir- "Agreed, but sneaking should be near impossible if they can smell the oil from my realm.
"That maybe a help, they might think your phyrexian at first. The stuff on demons from this realm is near useless." The library is one of the largest building in town, and they apparently copy every book or scroll that enters town and puts it here. the original owner get the copy. there isnt any layouts of Asphodel, but a few writers that have been there suggest it has a similar layout to Meletis, but the books aren’t dated so you dont know how long ago that was either. Ephara isnt a god of anti-undead but she does normally protect though that ask for her blessing. "We might be able to get you close... but honestly having you in the center of there lines isnt going to help us all that much. We'll need something powerful to help deal with their Colossus. I have a Titan friend i can summon to aid us. They have leonin on this world so he wont be that out of place when we get closer?"
Mellir- "A titan friend? Hmm ok. Perhaps we should ask the prophet if either his god or Ephara would give us equipment. I dont know what magical items there are around here, but I seriously doubt I could go toe to toe with a minotaur let alone a colossus. Not to mention whatever else they may have lying in wait guarding the portal. Also... do you know how to close the portal?
"Ah... No. I'm figuring its an artifact of some kind, so i'm just going to try and disenchant it. Basic plan to help deal with the Colossus aswell. Disenchant is a spell that destroys artifacts and enchantment very well. Normally doesnt harm creatures, but if there made of both it should be fine. Didnt sound like we were getting much of a care package from the Oracle, mostly just the map and a heads up of what we will find. Maybe they will appear to us as we make our way there? Honestly on my side here, these gods seem about as useful as every other gods i've heard about."
Mellir- "Well good luck to them if we fail then. Are we ready to be off?"
"Sounds like it. Maybe if we had more time we could scour this place for something useful but we have Phyrexia at the gate and nobody knows there bad house guests." Quick stop at the merchant ware for some provisions, apparently the human in the group need sustenance on occasion. Its growing dark as you guys head out of town. "Probably should wait for daylight, but we have already used to much time. Hope for no harpies." She cast a levitate spell on you both and you start to fly along.
Mellir- "So you have a titan at your beck and call?”
"Yes and no, a long while back i got stuck at a gladiator pit after my first walk. I met up with a Leonin there name Jareth and he was the first other being i learned to summon but he also alot of effort to summon so i dont call on him often."
Mellir- "Interesting, guess that explains why you walk around with me rather than him." I chuckle appreciatively.
"Dont take it has a sign of weakness, You are more then worth the effort to summon you, also you blend in on more worlds easier and can hold a conversations. Twelve foot leonin that picks fights constantly tend to stick out."
Mellir- "I suppose he would at that." Trying to imagine a giant cat walking around earth.
Asphodel is built on the coast of a marshlands sea deep inland and to the west. Traveling for most the night and half the following day she sets you down near the ‘shore’ of the sea well at least solid ground.
“You should probably get a short nap in at least while I prepare. How did we want to handle this? I can summon Jareth now and he can travel with us in, or summon him when he is needed, but there those few moments of grogginess right after the summon that he wont be of any help.”
Mellir- "I will take a nap. I suggest we summon him when he is needed, we do not want to weaken you before its necessary."
Sleeping in the marshes suck. Sleeping in the desert wasn’t nearly as bad. Kept having bad dreams of classic movie zombie crawling out of the marshes. You saw a returned back in Kolophon, it had been the transcribe at the library. Not the same kind of moaning thing from the B rated movies, but maybe it was just cause of the odd magic of this realm. You woke as nightfall approaches with Yaoel covering your mouth but shaking you awake. High above in the sky where she was pointed after a moment was a few sirens under attack from a Null Seraph. They tried to work together but couldn’t seem to leave a scratch on the Seraph, they both fell with just a few strike to there wings. “Phyrexian with protection magic.” She whispered.
Mellir- "Bound to be stronger than the last one i faced."
"It... might have protection from Evil as it's primary defense. Your not evil. Those Siren draw people to there death and have a strong tie to black mana."
Mellir- "Hmm true enough. Do we try to take it out now?"
"She looks like she's scouting the area, keeping an eye on things. I would like to end the exsistence they've forced on her, but she might be missed before we can find the portal. We'll have to leave her be and see if we can deal with it later. Whats are entry plan? Stealth in or walk up like foolish weary travelers?"
Mellir- "If the Phyrexians already have scouts about then perhaps stealth is better to start. if all else fails we will attempt to slip in as travellers."
"Looks like they have docks, and there boats from what i can tell leave the dock go out and wide circles and just come back in. Entering from the waterside will probably be the best bet since they still have solid walls to fortify." She pulls her hood lower to help hide all the brightness and start off around the lake. Its still a good distance across so your gonna wanna wait until you closer to swim.
Mellir- "With your levitate couldn't we avoid getting wet?"
"I used it up on the way here. I normally dont keep alot of utility spells ready. Your not a good swimmer?"
Mellir- "I can swim, doesn't mean i wanted to be sopping wet and cold when we get to the other side."
“The Dragon’s Mantel will warm you up and dry you off when we get ready for a fight.” The water isn’t all the deep, but there is a few Returned swimming around in it. The docks look to be made of wood, and possibly held together by magic. Several long boats are docked right now and only a handful of Returned are going about there business on the pier. You can see stone buildings with only a few candle helping to keep light during the afternoon. This place does feel darker as a heavy overcast seems to hang over the city.
Mellir- "Where was the portal at?
"That our problem. His map only showed it to be in this city, and the picture of it shows it embedded into a wall with two Null Seraph guarding it. I can sense evil, which is pretty much tell me where strong sources of black mana are, but eveyone in this town are zombie and pretty much inherently black mana. The picture didnt show if there was a roof, just stone floor, and these lovely zombie have full cobblestone streets."
Mellir- "Then i guess we start looking."
"We need to search as much as possible as fast as possible, but i'm not quiet comfortable with splitting up. We can try and ask some of the people here if they notice anything different, but i don't know how well that will work either way. My normal solution would be to hurt a phyrexian and let it escape and follow it back, but i dont know how long it will take to close up there own portal."
Mellir- "lets look around together first."
Moving through the town, trying to keep out of site while searching for the portal wall is rather difficult as the Returned are all over the place doing odd tasks. Each of them wear a gold mask, and from what you read there isn’t an actual face underneath so how good is there sight is also difficult to gauge. You are not finding it on street level, but there are a lot of alleyway, starting to think maybe these guys like alleyways rather then streets, but you search takes you to a small market square. The first non-Returned is sitting ontop of the temple the market is built around. He seems content to just watch the proceeds but Yaoel seems to almost vibrate was energy. “Demon.”
Mellir- "Phyrexian or not?"
Yaoel- "Does it matter?"
Mellir- "Matters if it will attack us on sight."
Yaoel- "Then we can return the favor." Fire in her eyes likes she’s itching for a fight but she stop cold, you can see her breath in and turn just a bit frightened. "Its a Theros demon, I think there is Phyrexian’s inside the building though. I can smell there glistening oil over all this rot. There got to be a number of them."
Mellir- "look for a back entrance then?"
Yaoel- "...Yes, well move around to the back and see if there is another entrance. Today is not my day for fights." She pulls the hood lower and goes back down the alley you came from, taking the turn to head towards the backside. It take a few minutes from the odd twists and turn, but the back side is there. There is a service entrance, but it looks like the same demon is sitting on the backside looking about.
Mellir- "Don't suppose you have a way of suppressing the demon quickly and quietly do you?”
Yaoel- "My quick and quiet is normal script for the book of serra while i wield a fiery whip and a cold iron blade. There are other ways, but my targets are normal killed before the can harm others rather then arrested. I can start in, or we can call Jareth here to help, but i dont think he can fit inside the temple."
Mellir- "I am unsure of starting a riot here if this is not the location of the portal. I think we need to investigate more." Are there any windows or anything so we could see inside?"
The temple side are all closed up, and this backside actually looks like its sinking into the ground with small pools of swamp water around the base. “Maybe we can just walk up and try to enter? He could be friendly.” Yaoel says trying not to giggle. Across the way you see a person wrapped in a dark gray cloak peer out of the alley way, the pull a hood down lower, but the golden hair is hard to miss. Her hands are white like porcelain and so are her feet that show from the bottom. She dashes across the open area, trying to stay close to the walls as much as she can, but the demon perks up and turns to regard her. “Eater of Hope I am creature, You were not given permission to pass.” And all the Returned in the area stop what they were doing and regard her. She continues for the door as the demon sweeps down at her.
Mellir- "Aid her or slip inside while it deals with her, make your decision now." I say as i prep myself for a charge.
“Go and aid the Demon, as vile as he is at least he belongs on this plane. If there inside she’ll call for backup. I’m summoning Jareth.” A dozen Returned in the area silently scream as the eye glow blue and turn towards the demons target. Behind you two an Ox like creature with 4 horns steps from the darkness pawing the ground and exhaling a toxic looking purple smoke. A warm presence engulfs you, and your mind clears.
Feels like Truths : The Demon is no ally to Ephara, and the strange creature made of porcelain is an abominations. The Returned around you are a mockery of life and will not be spare, and this Catobelpas is a flesheater and servant to the underwold on the physical plane (you know Ephara means Theros rather then the Underwold or Nyx), all of them are your enemies.
The Ghostblade appears before you again, envolpes you with that added power. The words ‘Destroy my Enemies’ echoes through your mind.
+1 Hit, +1 AC, +2d6 damage and 1 additional attack each turn at Full BaB 10DR against Evil.
Mellir- *So if i get this right... kill em all?*
DM- *Pretty much, other girl under the cloak is a Null Seraph trying to sneak past the Demon.*
Mellir- I focus my mind into an armor around me. Then stand defensively against the Catobelpas.
Hp: 56 Ac: 28 (10[base]+5(dex]+3[wis]+1[monk]+4[inertal armor]+4[Combat reflexes]+1[ghostblade]) Atk: +6/+6/+6 (4[bab]+5[dex]+1[tattoo]-1[flurry]-4[combat reflexes]+1[ghostblade]) Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
The Catobelpas launches into a charge flying right at you and Yaoel. Right as it reach you, you reach forward and slap its head, somehow diverting all of its force straight into the ground infront of you. The close Returned are moving in closer, and Yaoel finish her spell, unleashing a twelve foot leonine with a shield crouched on the ground hacking and coughing up a hairball. “Worse sensation ever angel.” He said as he looked up. “Angel! Where are your wings?!” was the second thing out of his mouth as he started to push himself up. You can hear a screeching sound like shattering glass from over by the demon, but cant give it enough attention to see whats happening.
Mellir- "They all must fall, Yaoel." I say as i unleash into the Catobelpas.
Hp: 56 Ac: 24 (10[base]+5(dex]+3[wis]+1[monk]+4[inertal armor]+1[ghostblade]) Atk: +10/+10/+10 (4[bab]+5[dex]+1[tattoo]-1[flurry]]+1[ghostblade]) Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
DM- *Agreeably Yaoel wants to kill both, but figured she would help the demon kill the Phyrexian before dealing with the demon*
Your first few stikes have trouble getting around the horns, but you finally just toss a hit front and center hard solid bone there (11damage) It reaches out and tries to bite your hand as you pull it back but doesn’t get to you in time. Despite the size Jareth moves towards the Demon. “There another one of those on the far side, I’m gonna go deal with it if you can finish this one. And watch your flank there are Returned coming up the other alley.” Yaoel says as she takes off.
Mellir- As I hadn't been injured yet my plan was to finish this guy as soon as possible, same plan, jab, cross, uppercut! Hp: 56 Ac: 24 Atk: +10/+10/+10 Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
It’s intelligent. You realize this as it keeps trying to get its four pointy horns in the way of your punches and jabs, it take the jabs put does its weird horn parrys to keep away the other strikes (8damage). It tries to take a chunk from your leg, but you get it pulled back in time. You sense an attack from behind as a Returned as gotten to you. The gold mask is unsetteling, but your able to keep back its simple slams and punches readily. You see 2 more coming up behind it.
Mellir- Knowing better than to let myself be flanked i launch my attacks at the Returned (if he drops the last attacks will go to the demon) Then take a five foot step back trying to avoid being surrounded. Hp: 56 Ac: 24 Atk: +10/+10/+10 Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
*That ox thing is actually a type of beast from what i understand, not demon*
You catch the Returned by surprise with the spin, nearly nocking him off balance as your second strike comes in break him in half. The ash that made up his body starts to fall off his bones, and his gold mask rattles as it hits the ground. You spin back around and hit the Ox thing on the head as it had tried to take a chunk out of your leg again(16damage). As you step back from the alleyway in the larger area, you can see 2 Returned coming from that close alleyway and still another 2 Returned behind you, but they seem to be focused on getting close to Jareth who is locked in battle with the Eater of Hope.
Mellir- Knowing they are going to try to get to me again i send three more blows at the returned then again step aside to avoid being flanked. Hp: 56 Ac: 24 Atk: +10/+10/+10 Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
Your First two strike catch that returned easily, breaking him down like the last, The third hit was a solid uppercut knocking off the second Returns Mask. Underneath looks like someone pulled he face inwards and twisted until only the edges of the face remained to be seen. Instead of attacking, he reaches down for his mask. The Ox seems to have enough and takes a few steps back before rushing you again. You jump over the top of him and he runs by going into the far wall. Seems a bit dozy and doesn’t have a chance to turn back towards you.
Mellir- I finish the returned then step to the catoplebas and attempt to finish it. Hp: 56 Ac: 24 Atk: +10/+10/+10 Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
You duck forward and hammerblow the returned but he ducks aside, your second strike catches the slow creature breaking him to ash. Turning back you delivey a blow trying to shatter something in the Ox. It take the blow but its ass droops a bit (12damage)as he turns around trying to catch with its horns but fails miserably. Another Returned is coming from that alleyway, but you can heard a tremendous crash as the top of the Temple is flipped aside and that colossus from the drawing stands up dwarfing even Jareth. It steps out with hammer blows on the big cat.
Mellir- Uhm shit, have to finish this soon. I step to the side of the catoplebas' head and unleash three haard blows trying to bring him down. Hp: 56 Ac: 24 Atk: +10/+10/+10 Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
You hear the Cat roar in pain, a weak sound as if he doesn’t have the strength for it. You get to the side of the Ox and delivery a perfect blow to the side of its head, it staggers a bit (41damagecrit) you follow it up with another solid blow to its back(15damge) and go to shatter its leg but it lunges out and bites you hard messing up your blow, the toxin spews heavily from its mouth righting into the wound and you can help but breath it in. (7bite) (4smog) “Jareth!” You hear Yaoel scream from the other side of the building. The ox thing seems really hurt and is haveing trouble standing (got to be in the last 1/4 of health)
Mellir- I attempt to bring down the cow before rescueing the cat. *last 1/4 after a fucking crit damn* Hp: 45/56 Ac: 24 Atk: +10/+10/+10 Dmg: 4d6+2 Speed: 50 10dr/evil
It just seems pleased with itself that it bit you when you grab it by the horns and hear the wonderful crack sound of its neck breaking finally. You move around and find the Colossus in full control, the Null Seraph is trying to fend off the Demon who is missing an arm, Jareth is laid out on the ground covered with this black oil that seems to be eating away at his body. There is a man standing next to you as you survey the scene, he is wearing golden hat and long black robes with a blue in lining. The shadow off him are alive with the night sky. As you regard him you feel the Ghostblade get ripped away from you, its warmth and protection gone. Yaoel is over in the corner, you see her Catbelpas is dead on the ground but she is fighting another demonic figure, You can see her yelling but her voice isn’t carrying anywhere, nether are the blows that lands from her sword that the demon scoughs off. “Ephara is barred from this City Champion.” The Man says standing next to you.
Mellir- "I apologize for bringing Ephara into your city without asking permission, but I had reasons. I see you are fighting against the Phyrexians as well, we can discuss terms after. Allow me and my friends to dispose of the Colossus for you to show we mean you no harm." I say as I eye the colossus and Yaoel. My blessing is gone, but is Yaoel can give me some of her own then I believe i might have a shot. "Of course having removed Ephara's blessing I am considerably weaker than I was, a show of faith from you, a blessing perhaps, would make this fight quicker so we could remove the Seraph from your midst as well."
"You miss understand child, the Colossus was a gift to me. I'm useing it quiet well now. Very few have ever study artifacts and living statues. The Machine Orthdoxy have lost theirs already, and my ally Archdemon Eligos there is content to take his own prize. He promised me an Ambulator, but a planeswaker itself will be an even greater prize." Beings made of the night sky come from the land of Nyx, sort of the heavens in this world. Your starting to think this is either a messenger or maybe one of the gods. Jareth expires and fades out in a flash of white smoke, and the Colossus strikes down crushing the Eater of Hope and the Null Seraph in the same blow. Before you can try to stike out at the Nyx Creature or go to Yaoels aid, Eligor catches Yaoels head in his palm and shredds her mind. Shes still alive, but passes out.
Your body freezes in place and you watch as it fall away to blue smoke. The tugging feeling isnt there but your next vision is coming to in your apartment.
You are back on earth.
